Winter 1998.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From Asia. A special feature on "Type Rebels".

Illinois (USA) are just two more designers who are beginning to make an impact on typography worldwide ÐÐ Sych through his fluid, almost painterly typographic creations and Segura through his own emotionally driven work, as well as the variety of innovative faces his company markets through his own font house, [T-26].

Sych's work is inspired by music, with loud colors, protracted typography and robust forms prevailing. A jazz musician by night, Sych considers his designs artistic improvisations, just as a musician caught in the heated energy of a jam session might refashion a classic favorite into a uniquely personal rendition.

Much of Segura's engaging, often enigmatic work is the result of spontaneous impulse. The designer explains, "I approach communication pretty much the way I do my career-from the gut." The type designers whose work is carried by [T-26], represent the same sort of creative sensibilities as Segura -- almost anything goes if it offers visual intrigue and provokes viewer reaction. The advent of the World Wide Web is promising many more thrills from the digital type front, as designers such as Gail Swanlund and Geoff Kaplan (California) team up to develop fonts specifically for the perculiarities and untold opportunites inherent to the interactive realm.

So the constant exploration continues, something that is leading the new practitioners to many design innovations. In spite of the sharp criticism they often draw from more traditional peers, these pioneers share the belief that rules -- no matter how sanctified they serve their cause -- are meant to be broken. You might not always like the results, but this rebellious attitude has made the 1990's one of the most uninhibited and exciting design eras yet.
